FOR THE ENGLISH VERSION GO TO THE BOTTOM

ENGLISH VERSION

DELAIN is a “new band” if we made a comparison with names as TARJA or NIGHTWISH, but you have been growing very fast, gaining fans and respect. What is the secret of your recent success?

I don’t know what you consider “new”, we just celebrated our 10 year anniversary. I guess you’re pointing that TARJA has been busy longer, even before I was really active with WITHIN TEMPTATION in 1996. Regardless, we just make the music that we like and it comes from the heart, that’s the most important. The rest is never give up, stick to yourself and work hard.

What’s the main difference between DELAIN and the rest of the gothic/symphonic bands? I know that every band is different, but what can you tell that the fans can find in you, which no one else have?

There’s a couple of things that need to be mentioned here. First, and as I said in the previous question, we make the music we love and nothing else; second, we’re a band that works with a typical pop structure in our songs -verse, chorus, middle parts- whereas other bands work with more orchestral structures. With us it’s just a pop song in the style of metal, we make it heavy in the production. Besides Charlotte has a very characteristic voice. I think you can recognize a DELAIN song when you hear it because of that, the sounds, the production and the voice.

You have been touring with NIGHTWISH and now are playing with TARJA, we all know that they don’t talk too much anymore and why. How is the feel to be in the middle of that complicated relationship of two friends who you can’t put together?

Actually, we didn’t experienced it like that at all. I only spoke to Tarja once, very briefly and a long time ago. My brother and my sister in law Sharon (den Adel) encountered with her because they worked together with WITHIN TEMPTATION. But I don’t think that’s an issue for us at all. We weren’t present in that situation so we have nothing to do with that, and therefore I also don’t have an opinión about it. We are happy we can perform together with TARJA and AMARANTHE and hope we can make a party out of it.

Talking about NIGHTWISH… recently you came to Latin America with them, but only for shows in countries like Mexico, Colombia or Peru. Why not Argentina? How was the experience of play as the opening of a legend of symphonic metal like Nightwish?

We didn’t do Argentina because we just didn’t had the time for it. We only did part of the time because we toured so much back then and we just released our album, it was a miracle we could do the countries we did. So that’s also why we are coming back to Argentina now. And regarding NIGHTWISH, i’ve always been their fan and followed them from the beginning. I remember when I was a member in WITHIN TEMPTATION we had CDs with tracks of different bands, and NIGHTWISH had the track “ElvenPath” and that immediatly stood out for me, I think it was in 96 or 97. Now they are also friends, really great people and is always a joy to tour with them. We also toured with them in North America, it’s always really fun.

If I’m not mistaken, Charlotte and Martijn are the responsibles for the composition of all the songs. This is something you decided as a band or simply the rest of the musicians prefer don’t involve in the writing?

Well, I started DELAIN and wrote almost everything for Lucidity (2006). This gradually changed because Charlotte did more and more, and now she is completely involved together with Guus (Eikens). Guus is not in the live band, but he has been involved in the songwriting from the very beginning and the three of us write everything. Besides that, DELAIN is not a democracy, Charlotte and I make the decisions and i’m the producer of the music. But we do welcome input from the band and fortunely this is happening more often, but this train is rolling with or without them because we did it already for so many years and so many albums. Me, Charlotte and Guus are the core of the band, but as I said, more and more is coming from members like Timo, who is making a lot of guitar arrangements, specially in the last album.

Some people think that the gothic/symphonic genre is something out of date. What do you think? now the genre is living a great moment? or conversely… it’s a difficult time?

Well, I was writing this music before it really peaked, so i agree is not really hot right now. On the other hand there are so many loyal fans, the music has so much to offer and there’s so many ingredients in it. It’s just take what you believe in and what you do and be very critical with that in order to get the best quality. Work hard and never forget your fans because thanks to them you can do what you do. I think we are very spoiled, maybe it’s out of date but at the same time it’s not. There a huge place for it and don’t think its going away any time soon.
