Considerados una banda culto en su natal Leeds, ALLUSONDRUGS está de vuelta con un nuevo nombre y un nuevo mensaje. La banda de rock se convirtió en ALLUSINLOVE y después de un descanso autoimpuesto, regresó con un llamado de amor y queriendo enterrar el pasado. Al final, todos merecemos una segunda oportunidad ¿o no?

Nos comunicamos con su guitarrista, Drey, para conocer todos los detalles acerca del cambio de nombre, el nuevo sonido de la banda, el destino de los antiguos temas y mucho más.

Primero que nada… ¿Qué pasó con ALLUSONDRUGS? ¿Por qué decidieron cambiar el nombre de la banda?

Queríamos eliminar cualquier connotación negativa sobre nuestro nombre, ya que estaba causando demasiados conceptos erróneos sobre el tipo de banda que éramos. Siempre teníamos que trabajar el doble de fuerte y estar constantemente explicándonos para que las personas puedan entender el nombre y su significado. Mucha gente ni siquiera se molestaba en escucharnos o venir a vernos porque el ambiente general era “esta banda está en las drogas”. Parece que el mundo simplemente no está listo para esta frase gramaticalmente incorrecta.

Ahora que tienen nuevo nombre, ¿están tratando de sonar diferente? ¿O el cambio de sonido fue algo que ocurrió espontáneamente? Lo digo porque me parece que ALLUSONDRUGS era más grunge y ALLUSINLOVE es más indie. ¿A ti que te parece?

Esa es una comparación justa. Somos esencialmente una banda nueva. Tuvimos un miembro anterior que fue responsable de algunos de los viejos sonidos grunge. Después de la partida de este miembro, escribimos un montón de demos y conseguimos un contrato de grabación con el nuevo sonido. Allusinlove producirá, en un principio, un sonido más accesible y compatible con la radio, sin embargo, nunca renunciaremos al elemento del rock pesado y psicodélico en nuestra música; de hecho, planeamos profundizar en lo desconocido con cada álbum que hagamos. Solo hay buena y mala música y queremos hacer la mejor música que podamos.

Esta nueva era de la banda vino con un lema bastante fuerte: unidad. ¿Cuál es el propósito de la banda con esto? ¿Sientes que hay una necesidad de traer de vuelta aquellos mensajes de “paz y amor”?

Si, absolutamente. Hay mucha división en el mundo en este momento y la gente olvida que para sobrevivir física y mentalmente todos nos necesitamos unos a otros. Para que esto ocurra, se deben hacer sacrificios, especialmente cuando se trabaja en grupo. Yo creo en enviar mensajes de positividad y unidad como banda, en lugar de decirle a la gente “cómo son las cosas y cuán malo es el mundo”, eso en realidad no ayuda a nadie. Solo queremos hacer buena música y hacer que la gente se sienta bien. No necesitamos decirte lo mal que están las cosas mientras las haces.

Los fans de ALLUSONDRUGS se están preguntando acerca del futuro de las antiguas canciones… ¿Seguirán tocando los viejos temas en vivo?

Hemos traido algunas canciones de Allusondrugs al mundo de Allusinlove, las cuales se han vuelto a grabar y aparecerán en futuros lanzamientos, en nuestro álbum debut. Y si, algunas de las canciones antiguas también se seguirán tocando en vivo.

¿Estarán disponibles esas canciones antiguas en las plataformas de streaming bajo el nombre de ALLUSINLOVE? ¿Cómo podemos encontrarlas?

En cuanto a TODAS las grabaciones anteriores, actualmente no hay planes para que estas vuelvan a aparecer en ninguna parte. Hemos recibido una cantidad considerable de solicitudes del material antiguo y esto nos ofrece una valiosa lección acerca de la importancia de comprar música en físico. Hay muchos fans que invirtieron en nosotros y compraron nuestros lanzamientos físicos. Si los fans aman realmente un disco tanto como dicen, entonces deben hacer todo lo posible para adquirirlo en lugar de simplemente escucharlo via streaming desde alguna plataforma donde el artista apenas recibe algo de dinero. Ve y compra los lanzamientos físicos de tus bandas favoritas tan pronto como salgan y nunca tendrás este problema.

Cuéntame acerca del tema “All Good People” y el video. ¿De quién fue la idea del clip?

“All Good People” fue nuestro último lanzamiento DIY (hazlo tu mismo) como banda independiente. Esta canción atrajo la atención de algunas personas muy importantes que más tarde nos permitieron hacer nuestro primer video musical de producción completa y la grabación de la canción.

¿Por qué eligieron ese tema como sencillo?

Nuestro sello discográfico decidió que quería comenzar todo con “All Good People” y nosotros estuvimos contentos con eso. Era la oportunidad de lanzar, de manera apropiada, un sonido mucho más accesible y un mensaje de positividad.

¿Y qué me cuentas del nuevo EP? Ahora que tienen un nombre nuevo… ¿sientes como si este fuera tu primer álbum?

Con el EP de Allusinlove, el enfoque homónimo nos pareció muy apropiado. Es de la misma forma en que empezamos Allusondrugs. Las canciones que aparecen en este EP fueron parte de un lote de 16 canciones que grabamos con Catherine Marks en Assault & Battery Studio’s en Londres en el verano de 2018.

¿Cómo fue trabajar con Catherine Marks?

Fue una experiencia increíble trabajar con Catherine. Ella tiene una personalidad tan increíble. Muy paciente, muy eficiente e increíblemente humilde y motivada.

“Full Circle” es mi canción favorita del EP, es realmente muy buena! Supongo que tienen muchos más temas escritos y grabados, pero solo seleccionaron cuatro. ¿Cómo fue la seleccion de temas para el EP? ¿Por qué esos y no otros?

¡Excelente! ¡Buena elección! “Full Circle” fue una de las primeras colaboraciones que escribimos juntos como banda cuando comenzamos a forjar el nuevo sonido. Habrá muchas más canciones como esta en el futuro. Nuestro sello discográfico seleccionó las canciones de nuestro EP; todos sentimos que para que pudieran lograr la mejor promoción posible, necesitábamos que les dejarles la elección de las canciones.

¿Cuál es tu tema favorito?

Amamos todas nuestras canciones por igual, así que nos sentimos muy cómodos con todas.

First of all… what happened with allusondrugs? Why did you decide to change the band’s name?

We wanted to remove any negative connotations about our name as it was causing far too many misconceptions about the kind of band we were. We would always have to work twice as hard and constantly explain ourselves in order for people to get past the name and it’s meaning. A lot of people weren’t even bothering to listen or come and watch us because the general vibe was ‘this band is on drugs’. It seems that the world just isn’t ready for this kind grammatically incorrect phrase.

With a new name, are you trying to sound different? Or it was something that occurred spontaneously with the composition? I mean, I think that Allusondrugs was more grunge and Allusinlove sounds more indie. What do you think?

That’s a fair comparison. We are essentially a new band. We had a previous member leave who was responsible for some of the old grunge sound. After the departure of this member we wrote a bunch of demos and secured a record deal with the new sound. Allusinlove will produce a more accessible and radio friendly sound at first, however we will never lose the element of psychedelic heavy rock in our music – in fact we plan to go deeper into the unknown with every album we make. There is only good and bad music out there and we want to make the best music we possibly can.

This new era of the band came with a strong motive: unity. What is the purpose of the band with that? Do you feel there is a necessity of bring back those messages as “peace and love”?

Yes absolutely. There is a lot of divide in the world at the moment and people forget that in order to survive physically and mentally we all need each other. In order for this to happen sacrifices have to be made, especially when working together in a group. I think we are sending messages of positivity and unity as a band, rather than telling people ‘look how bad things are and look how shit the world is’ doesn’t really help anyone at all. We just want to make good music and make people feel good. We don’t need to tell you how bad things are whilst doing so.

The fans of allusondrugs are wondering about the future of the old songs… will be available on streaming platforms as allusinlove? How can we find them? Will you be playing your old songs live?

We have taken forward a select few Allusondrugs songs into the world of Allusinlove and they have been re-recorded and will appear on future releases / our debut album. Some of the old songs will also continue to be played live. As for ALL of the old recordings – there are currently no plans for these to re-surface anywhere as of yet. We get a fair few enquiries about the older material and this always highlights a valuable lesson in the importance of purchasing physical music. There are a lot of fans who invested in us and bought our physical releases. If fans really love a record as much as they claim to then they will do their best to own it instead of just streaming it from a platform where the artist barely makes any money. Go and buy your favorite bands physical releases as soon as they come out and you’ll never have this problem.

Tell me about “All Good People” song and video clip. Who came with the idea of the clip? Why choose that song as a single?

“All Good People” was our last DIY release as an unsigned band. This song attracted the attention of some very important people who later enabled us to make our first full production music video and recording of the song. Our record label wanted to kick things off with All Good People and we were happy with this. It was a chance to properly release a much more accessible sound and a message of positivity.

And what about the new EP? Now that you have a new name… Do you feel it like your first album? How was working with Catherine Marks?

With the Allusinlove EP the self titled approach seemed very fitting. It’s the same way we started Allusondrugs. The songs that feature on this EP were part of a batch of 16 songs we recorded with Catherine Marks at Assault & Battery Studio’s in London in summer 2018. It was an amazing experience working with Catherine. She is such an incredible personality. Very patient, very efficient and incredibly humble and driven.

“Full circle” is my favorite song of the EP, it a really great song! I suppose you have more songs written and recorded, but only four was selected. How was the selection of the songs in the EP? Why those and not the others? Which is your favorite?

Excellent! Good choice! Full Circle was one of the first collaborations we wrote together as a band when we started forging the new sound. There will be many more songs like this in the future. Our record label selected the songs on our Allusinlove EP – we all felt that in order for them to achieve the best promotion possible we needed to let them dictate the song choice. We love all our songs equally so we were very comfortable with this.
