El punk tiene en Buenos Aires un segundo hogar, de demostrar eso se han encargado varias bandas de todo el mundo, sin embargo que no se diga que solo hay espacio para leyendas y grandes nombres. Desde la escena más under hasta la más mainstream, cada banda tiene su público en el país sudamericano y este año serán varias las visitas que tendremos en representación del género.

Siendo una auténtica muestra perseverancia, los canadienses de MUTE estarán visitando Argentina por cuarta vez, con la particularidad de que en esta ocasión serán acompañados por la banda estadounidense NO TRIGGER. Dialogamos con ellos para interiorizarnos en los últimos acontecimientos del grupo, su ética de trabajo y las proyecciones sobre esta nueva gira.

MUTE es una banda que se preocupa por su estética y líricas. ¿A qué se debe? ¿tiene alguna relación con el trasfondo musical de cada miembro?

Bueno, esa es una buena pregunta. Soy el que se encarga de organizar todo el diseño de la banda desde el comienzo. En un principio yo estaba haciendo todos los diseños, pero llegó un punto en el que tuve que contratar ayudantes porque me requería demasiado trabajo. Todos venimos de un background distinto y pronto me di cuenta que yo tenía mucho interés en eso, mientras que los otros chicos no. Así es como aprendí a trabajar con Photoshop e Illustrator, lo que me llevó a estudiar diseño gráfico en la universidad.

Ahora soy un fotógrafo full-time, pero aún así me encargo de cada cosa de diseño que hacemos. ¡Lo hago contratando algunos de los mejores artistas en el mundo! Ah, ¡también me reservo el placer de hacer el arte de cada álbum! Como también me encargo de las letras de la banda, me resulta entretenido pasar las líricas a conceptos visuales. Aquí hay un video que lo resume bastante bien.

Remember Death (2016) es un álbum que suena muy ajustado. ¿Qué miembro de la banda se concentró más en el audio durante la mezcla?

Comparado al diseño, el proceso de grabación es un trabajo de equipo. Todos nos aseguramos de que este sea nuestra mejor producción hasta la fecha. Fue nuestra tercera vez trabajando con el mismo productor, Jef Fortin, en el mismo estudio. Desde el comienzo decidimos que quieríamos un álbum que sea puro, y por eso me refiero a baterías sin triggers, voces sin autotune. En estos últimos años escuchamos tantos álbumes que sonaban como si hubiesen sido tocados por robots y nosotros no queremos eso. En cambio, trabajamos el doble para que esta obra esté lista en un 100% antes de ingresar al estudio. Hicimos tres pre-producciones y creo que eso se ve en la versión final: ¡escuchas a una banda haciendo Punk Rock! Y aquí hay otro video sobre eso.

Este año lanzaron un video para «The Dagger». ¿Qué les hizo elegir esa canción como single para Remember Death?

Con unos meses de lanzadas, algunas canciones tuvieron una mejor respuesta por parte del público y esta es una de ellas, desde el día uno. Tenía la duración apropiada, el estribillo es pegadizo y muchas personas nos comentaron que era su canción favorita del álbum. Simplemente se destacaba.

¿Qué les hizo tomar la decisión de dedicarle mucha energía a girar y no a componer nueva música desde Thunderblast (2011)?

No somos compositores rápidos, todos tenemos trabajos durante el día y eso nos toma la mayoría de nuestro tiempo en este mundo. Esa es alguna de las razones del por qué, también hay como tres o cuatro años entre cada álbum, siempre queremos hacer las cosas bien y escribir mejor música. Eso lleva tiempo. Nuestro último disco puede ser tu favorito, o no, pero puedes asegurarte que tiene más esfuerzo que los demás. Es realmente un alivio cuando la obra se edita y puedo ir hacia el otro lado del mundo y poner estas canciones a trabajar. Una banda tiene que girar y mostrar sus nuevas canciones, si no lo hace, para mí se está perdiendo lo mejor.

¿Qué expectativas tienen para este tour con NO TRIGGER?

Primero que nada, nos sentimos muy agradecidos con el hecho de poder visitar Sudamérica por cuarta vez. Ahora me encuentro en un hotel de Porto Alegre, Brazil, y el tour comienza mañana. Practicamos mucho para esto y no podemos esperar para presentarles a nuestro nuevo guitarrista, Matt. Dicho eso, estamos muy contentos de girar con NO TRIGGER, es una banda que escuchamos durante muchos años y nunca pudimos tocar con ellos.

¿Conoces algo de música argentina?

Argentina es conocida mundialmente por el Tango, pero también sé que la escena Rock por allí es muy sólida. Estamos ansiosos de escuchar a nuestras bandas soporte: MURALLAS, FUISTE MI HÉROE y ECOS NOVENTA. ¡Lo mismo para ARTISTA DESCONOCIDO de Uruguay!

ENGLISH VERSION

MUTE is a band that it’s always concern of being focused on it’s imagery and the lyrics. Why is that? It has some relation with the musical background of each member?

Well that’s a good question. I’m the one that manages all the band design since the beginning. At first, I was doing all the designs myself but at some point, I had to hire some help because the demand was too great. We all come from different backgrounds in the band and I soon realized that I had great interest in that and the other guys not so much. That’s how I learned to work with Photoshop and Illustrator which brought me to college studying graphic design. I’m now a full-time photographer but I still manage every piece of design that comes out. I do so by hiring some of the best artists in the world! Oh and I kept to myself the pleasure of doing all the album artworks!
Since I’m also a lyricist in the band, it’s fun for me to translate some lyrics to visual concepts. Here’s a little video that sums it all pretty well!

Remember Death (2016) is an album that sounds pretty tight. Who in the band was more focused on the audio during the mix?

Compared to design, recording is a team effort. We all do our part in making sure this is our best recording yet. It was our third time working with the same producer, Jef Fortin, at the same studio. We decided,from the very beginning, that we wanted an album that was pure playing. By that, I mean no triggers on drums, no autotuned on vocals. We heard so many albums in the last few years that sounded like they’ve been played by robots and we didn’t want that. Instead, we worked twice as hard to be a 100% ready before entering the studio. We did 3 pre-productions and I think that shows on the final version. You hear a band playing Punk Rock! Here’s another video about that.

You released a video for “The Dagger” this year. What made you choose this song for a single of Remember Death?

After a few months of the album being out, some songs got better response from the crowd and this is one of them since day one. It had the right length, the chorus is catchy and lots of people were telling us it was their favorite song of the album. It just stood out.

What made you to take the decision of put energy on touring and not on writing new music since Thunderblast (2011)?

We’re not fast writers. We all have day jobs and that takes most of our time in this world. Those are a few of the reason why. There was always 3-4 years between each album. We always want to make things right and to write better music. That takes some time. Our last album might be your favorite one or not but know that we putted way more effort into it than the previous ones. Every little detail was overlooked twice. Writing music is the hard part (to me at least). I’m all by myself for the most of it trying to come up with ideas and working on them. It’s a real relieve when the album comes out and I can go to the other side of the world putting these songs to work. A band has to tour to challenge people with his new proposal. Not doing it would be missing out on the best part in my opinion.

Any expectations for this tour with NO TRIGGER?

Well first of all we are super grateful to be visiting South America for the fourth time. I’m currently in a hotel room in Porto Alegre, Brazil and the tour is starting tomorrow. We practiced a lot for this tour and can’t wait to introduce you to our new guitar player Matt. That being said, we’re also super happy to tour with NO TRIGGER. It’s a band we’ve been listening to for many years now and never got the chance to play with them.

Are you familiar with argentinian music?

Argentina is world known for Tango but I also know that the Rock scene is pretty solid over there. Looking forward discovering the opening bands of the show: MURALLAS, FUISTE MI HÉROE and ECOS NOVENTA. Also shout out to  ARTISTA DESCONOCIDO from Uruguay!
