ENGLISH VERSION

I recently read that Down Below (2018) would be like a synthesis of TRIBULATION’s
career. Where do you find that pieces that unify the group’s discography?

I can’t say I remember stating anything like that, but we do draw a lot of inspiration from the ethereal being and force that TRIBULATION has become. But you can also see it in the way that TRIBULATION is a framework where a lot of things can happen and some things can’t happen, but we are willing to try a lot, while still staying true to that original framework.

I would say that what unifies the albums is that very framework and the inspiration that was originally blown into it. The inspiration to the first album and to the most recent one is surprisingly similar in content, but that content has now been digested for a longer time and it comes out from the same people but 9 years later, hence it’s bound to change.

After such a profound record like Down Below. What is next on the band’s composition? What
other horizons are you looking to achieve?

I have no idea where it will go to be perfectly honest. I have, and we all have, some ideas now but, relying on experience, those ideas will twist and turn ’til we enter the studio next time. At the moment we are focusing on touring! One step at a time!

TRIBULATION can be defined as a musical group that uses
music as a way to escape from a corrupt political world. I ask that question because I recall reading it in other media. Is that related with some message of aesthetical musical appreciation?

I don’t remember saying that either, but in one way it’s indeed true. I would say that in one aspect it’s an escape from the modern world in general. Accepting what’s going on while still trying to stay as grounded as possible in this desacralized world of shallowness and change for change’s sake. I would hope that we do music for people with patience.

That’s the way I have always viewed Heavy Metal music, it doesn’t seem to be made for people who don’t have the patience to listen to full albums and appreciate the art. I never saw Heavy Metal as an escapist thing when I was younger, but it can absolutely be just that, for better and for worse.

The live performances of the band are like a sort of ritual. How do you mentally prepare for
them?

They are ritualistic in the sense that we do the same thing night after night while still trying to be spontaneous in the process, and that we use ritualistic things incense and that we indeed even done a costume for the occasion. We are also walking a thin line between doing something for the amusement of others and for doing something where we at least partially dim the space between corporeal reality and the world of art and, in the best of cases, spirit whether it is about us or the visitor. Though to be fair most people come for the Heavy Metal show, and luckily we’re a Metal band.

How is the band getting ready for the South American Tour? Is the set list going to be
composed of more Down Below material? Because the live shows of TRIBULATION are like a
mix of different albums.

We’re going to do as we always do and try to squeeze in as much as we can while still delivering a well balanced set in every way possible, but obviously focusing on the latest album as well. I think you can expect something from every record.

Aside of SEPULTURA, are you aware of any south american band or musician?

Yes, I have listened to south american Metal since I was 13. The first bands I liked were SARCÓFAGO (Brazil) and HOLOCAUSTO (Brazil). They had quite a profound effect on me back then because of the ferocity of the music and their absolute extreme metal aesthetics and expression! Absolutely a big inspiration to why we ended up looking the way we do on stage, especially SARCÓFAGO.

Another band I can mention is RETROSATÁN (Argentina). Indeed very different than the brazilian bands, but very cool heavy metal music!

As a music fan, what are you listening as a soundtrack in your current tour?

The song that was spinning the most on the last tour was PHENOMENA’s “Dance With the Devil”! Other than that it was a mix of IRON MAIDEN, TYPE O NEGATIVE, russian metal, swedish folk singers and LANA DEL REY.
