Steffen Kummerer: “Nunca esperamos tan buena respuesta”.

ENGLISH VERSION

“Akróasis” has been the release of the year so far in many metal websites, did you expect that a technical progressive record like this could ever have such a great response?

Obscura PromoWe never expected such a great feedback on especially the mainstream media. This week our brand new music video for “Ten Sepiroth” just saw a premiere through MTV and a day later through VH-1 which happens once uppon a time for extreme metal bands. A big part are our loyal fans that supprot the band since more than a decade, sharing the music with friends, visiting the bands concerts and of course purchase the music that brought our new album up to the Billboard Charts.

Although the album is pretty technical the first riff in “Ode to the sun” is all about old school Death Metal. Do you think that thanks to this song you can attract a wider audience who might have never listened to progressive and technical metal before?

“Ode to the Sun” was quite an experimental song with a few ideas out of the box that was mentioned to be a bonus track during the preproduction of Akróasis. The song is based on the idea to reduce the guitars on purpose to give vocals arrangements more room within the harmony spectrum. In the past we worked with slower songs on every record, just listen to “Nothing”, “Headworm” or “Ocean Gateways” of the past records. The whole album profits from diversity and “Ode to the Sun” definitely blends an interesting side of the band. Surprisingly, the fans love this songs and during the last tours the feedback is fantastic.

“Akróasis” is probably the most accessible song in the whole record. Is this why you chose it to be the song that represents the album with the video? Maybe as a teaser of what the album really has to offer?

Obscura BandaThe title track shows all trademarks of the bands but at the same time represents the overall laid-back vibe of the record very well. Also, the song seems very short and keeps a stringent arrangement combined with a lot of rhythmic variation and tonal information at the same time.

I noticed that the mixing on your album it’s really “modern” in terms of sound. What took you to prefer that “cutting edge” sound?

We recorded Akróasis with our live equipment only. Exactly the drumset Sebastian Lanser plays during our tours and the bass and guitar equipment we use since years. In the studio we used analog equipment and looked into a bright rock production instead of a polished digital faceless recording. It is all about finding your own sound and identity. The dynamics are fantastic and I am absolutely satisfied with the warm organic sound and mix. It was not meant to be sharp or very agressive – the quality and engineering on a high end level was more important to me.

How do you see the band’s growth on the last years?

The band always grew from year to year, but when Akróasis was released we could tell within the first tour and of course all chart entries that we made a huge step forward. OBSCURA turned from a known, touring underground act into a well established touring act the band can make a living of. I am grateful for everyone supporting us and can’t wait to hit the road again to play live for our fans.
