ENGLISH VERSION

In which aspects can you say that UNEARTHLY TRANCE has evolved as a band with Stalking The Ghost (2017) as the comeback album for the band?

I think we have evolved in the way that we operate as a power trio unit. I think we have matured as players and have all respectively focused in on what our singular goal was this time around. Our heads were in a good place and we felt reinvigorated of Stalking The Ghost. This album is all about cleaning the slate and starting fresh. This is our return and what we consider this band to be all about; crushing riffs, huge punishing drums and quality songs.

How was the band’s dynamic writing and recording this new record in the studio?

We had probably the best and most connected dynamic ever in the studio. We were able to lay down the basic tracks of bass, guitar and drums live and it’s what you hear on the record. We recorded while in the same room and we were locked in and comfortable. The songwriting has evolved on my end where I am more prepared with demos of my ideas to present to the guys. My demos of songs are with drum programming on the computer. The ability to edit on the computer for songwriting exploration is a great time saver and creative tool. I have already worked out my songwriting options before I bring a new song to the table. Then from there we can alter, adjust and fix as Darren (Verni) and Jay (Newman) see fit.

How was working with Colin Marston as the producer of Stalking The Ghost?

Colin was incredible. He works very quickly and has vast amounts of musical intellect and technical knowledge. And most of all he is a cool down-to-earth guy. I have worked with him in the past with my other band THE HOWLING WIND and I always knew he would be perfect for UNEARTHLY TRANCE.

He captured us in our live formation as we tracked all the basic sounds together at the same time. I think all the tones we recorded sounded killer and this is easily the best bass guitar tone we have ever achieved!

How would you describe the album’s concept? What relation do you find between the concept behind the material and the final sound mix?

I think the sound is summary of all the places we have traveled sonically and all the things we have conjured in a new formation. Stalking The Ghost means chasing something that for us, was our band yet it was there all along. We broke up for a few years and it was haunting us subconsciously until we realized we actually were hunting it down.

Where did you take the inspiration for the lyrics?

I took inspiration from the vast amounts of bits and scraps I had of unused lyrics I had over the years. I found some great stuff that helped me start writing new UNEARTHLY TRANCE lyrics. It was a perfect way to bridge the old and the new. My inspiration always comes from many cathartic busts of writing where I write it – on computer – in a fast loose way and then come back to it the next day to refine it. I have always been blessed with the ability to get these burst of creative that get channeled through me.

What do you think that Stalking The Ghost adds to your discography?

I think it represents a new beginning. A ferocious statement that we will never take the easy road or the safe route. The trident guides us through the night.

Which are your main goals for the future of the group?

We have some European shows book around Roadburn and a few fests and one offs booked in the states. Besides that we have a new split recording we are working on in a few months. Our goal is and has always been to continue to make music in one way or another. To exist and be creative.
