Cuando la presentación de una banda dice “somos de Suecia”, es dificil no predisponerse a que sonará bien, no importa el género. El caso de AMARANTHE no es la excepción, una banda que, debido a la cantidad de géneros musicales que fusiona, podría ser la embajadora oficial de la música de dicho país. Su particular sonido rockero es una especie de ABBA con IN FLAMES rociado de ACE OF BASE y una pizca de Avicii.

Si tuviesemos que buscar una banda con la cual torturar a los puristas del “verdadero metal”, esos que no aceptan nada melódico dentro del género y odiaban el glam, AMARANTHE sería una buena opción. Su fusión de música electrónica y pop con death metal, así como esa mezcla de voces dulces y ritmos pegadizos con gruñidos y breakdowns metaleros, los convierte en todo lo que para muchos no se puede hacer en el metal.

Con tan solo 10 años de carrera (fue fundada en Gotemburgo por Olof Mörck y Jake E en el 2007) la banda desafía todo lo establecido y navega por la experimentación sonora que le permite tener 3 vocalistas y músicos con la mente muy abierta. Su éxito en países como Finlandia y Suecia es indiscutible, alcanzando también las carteleras de USA y Canadá. ¿Conquistarán también latinoamérica?.

Conversamos con su vocalista Elize Ryd y su guitarrista Olof Mörck antes de su primera visita a sudamérica y esto fue lo que ocurrió:

Ustedes hacen una mezcla muy interesante, desde metal hasta electrónica y pop. La pregunta es… ¿Por qué? ¿Es debido a que les gustan todos esos géneros de música y no se pudieron decidir por uno solo? ¿O les gusta el sonido de todos esos géneros mezclados? ¿Cómo funciona?

Elize: Pasó naturalmente, juntamos nuestras especialidades y “el sonido Amaranthe” simplemente ocurrió. Pudimos notar al escucharlo que encajaba bien todo junto, los riffs con los gruñidos, las melodías más clásicas del metal con las melodías mas poperas. Las partes electrónicas fueron algo que a todos nos gustó y que nos inspiró. La electrónica fue algo muy popular en Suecia en los 90’s así que es algo con lo que todos crecimos, escuchandolo en diferentes maneras, como In Flames, Basic Element y E-Type.

Audicionaste para ser la vocalista de NIGHTWISH una vez ¿cierto? Y ahora estarás tocando en el mismo escenario con Tarja, la voz principal de esa leyenda del metal sinfónico. Qué se siente verte a ti misma tocando junto a tus idolos?

Elize: ¡Se siente I.N.C.R.E.I.B.L.E! Tarja y Amy Lee de EVANESCENCE fueron mis dos principales modelos a seguir. Es loco como transcurre la vida, yo recuerdo cuando NIGHTWISH tocó en Gotenburgo, en el Lisebergshallen, y en ese momento me enamoré de ella (Tarja). Casi no puedo creer, primero que nada, que vamos a ir a Buenos Aires, y luego, por encima de eso, para ser soportes de Tarja, la razón por la cual yo estoy donde estoy. Todo ha girado de muy buena manera al final, incluso aunque yo no obtuve el puesto como remplazo de ella en NIGHTWISH. ¡Creo que esto es todavía mejor! (risas)

Hablando de tocar con los idolos, yo recuerdo cuando cantaste con NIGHTWISH en aquel polémico show en el cual Anette se enfermó y tuvo que permanecer en el hospital mientras ellos tocaban, justo antes de que se separaran. ¿Cómo fue esa noche? ¿Cómo fue la situación detrás del escenario?

Elize: La situación fue como una mezcla entre relajada y en pánico. Tuvimos que resolverla juntos, la banda estaba muy nerviosa. Y yo no podía creer en lo que me estaba metiendo. Yo me sabía todas las letras de la mayoría de las canciones, pero debido a esa inesperada situación y el stress sentí que de repente casi no podía recordar nada. Le tengo respeto al miedo, lo siento, pero con este tipo de trabajo, eso es lo que tienes que trabajar cada día, y esta no fue una excepción. Gracias al apoyo de la audiencia, NIGHTWISH pudo ofrecer un excelente show, y yo estaba extasiada una vez que entré al escenario con ellos, fue como un sueño hecho realidad. Desearía poder hacerlo de nuevo.

Jake E dejó la banda recientemente para dedicar su tiempo a su familia y otros proyectos… ¿fue algo que vieron venir? ¿o fue una sorpresa?

Elize: Lo vimos venir. El nos informó antes de comenzar a componer el último disco, asi que tuvimos bastante tiempo para “tener eso en mente” durante todo el proceso, lo cual fue muy bueno. Pero por supuesto ahora la situación es mejor, cuando ya sabemos quien es la voz para la cual estamos escribiendo canciones.

Estoy seguro que no es fácil encontrar un remplazo cuando tocas algo tan particular como tu música. ¿Cómo fue la búsqueda? ¿Donde consiguieron a Nils Molin?

Olof: Fue especialmente difícil para esta banda, dado que no solo teníamos que enfocarnos en encontrar un gran cantante sino también una voz que se pudiera ajustar a la de Elize. Henrik encontró a Nils, el se lo sugirió al resto de la banda. Yo conozco a Nils también a través de DYNAZTY, es un gran artista. Nos enteramos que era un fan de AMARANTHE desde antes, lo cual fue un plus. Le preguntamos si estaba interesado en cubrir la vacante por algunos shows. Encajó muy bien en el grupo, también a un nivel personal, lo cual es muy importante, dado que estamos girando activamente.

Hay una canción en Maximalism, el último disco, cantada solo por Elize. ¿Habrá más canciones donde ocurra lo mismo? ¿Por qué no hay otras voces en “Endlessly”?

Olof: Hemos hecho canciones antes con solamente voces limpias, tales como “Burn with me” y “True”. Dado que ya nosotros sabíamos antes de terminar el álbum, que Jake no iba a continuar siendo parte de la banda, fue una elección natural dejar ese tema con una sola voz, la de Elize. “Fury”, la canción de Henrik, también incluye voces de Elize únicamente, en los coros, y esa fue una decisión consciente, basada en el mismo hecho. Como banda quisimos crear una unidad además de no saber quien podría ser el tercer vocalista. También supimos que nos iba a dar la oportunidad de hacer shows en vivo más variados, lo cual fue un cambio con respecto al pasado. Tenemos que dejar más espacio para Nils en el próximo álbum. Parte del desarrollo de esta banda es sentir que no ponemos límites a nadie ni a nada, no importa lo que pase.

You play a very interesting mixture of music, from metal to electronic and pop. The question is… why? Is because do you like the whole genres of music and can’t decide from only one? Or do you like the sound of all that genres mixed up? How it works?

Elize: It happened naturally, we putted together our specialities and The Amaranthe Sound just happened. We could hear it fitted very well together, the riffs, with the Growls, the more classic metal melodies and the more poppy melodies. The electronic parts was something we all loved and got very inspired by, it was very popular in Sweden in the 90’s so that’s something we all grew up with listen to in different forms, as In Flames, Basic Element and E-Type.

You auditioned to be the NIGHTWISH’s vocalist once, right? And now you are playing in the same scenario with Tarja, the main voice of that legend of symphonic metal. How is t

he feel of seeing yourself playing with your idols?

Elize: It feels A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! Tarja and Amy Lee from Evanescence was my two biggest role models. It’s crazy how life goes, I remember when Nightwish played in Gothenburg, at Lisebergshallen, and I fell in love with her then. I almost can’t believe, first of all, that we are going to Buenos Aires, and then on top of that, to support Tarja, the reason why I am where I am. It all turned out pretty good in the end, even though I didn’t get to replace her in Nightwish. I think this is even better! (laughs)

Talking about playing with idols, I remember that you sang with Nightwish in that polemic show in which Anette get sick and had to stay in the hospital, before they break up. How was that night? How was the situation behind the scenes?

Elize: The situation was a bit like a mixture between relaxed and panic. We had to keep it together, the band was very nervous. And I couldn’t believe what I was getting myself into. I knew all the lyrics to many of their songs, but because of the unexpected situation and the stress I felt that I suddenly almost couldn’t remember anything. I respect fear, I felt it, but with this kind of job, that’s what you have to work towards every day, and this wasn’t an exception. Because of the support from the audience, Nightwish did pull off a killer show! And I was in ecstasy once I walked on that stage, it was like a dream come true. I wish I could do it again.

Jake E left the band recently to dedicate his time in his family and other projects. Was that something you saw it coming? Or was a surprise?

Elize: We saw it coming. We got informed before we’ve started to compose the latest album, so we had quite some time to “keep that in mind” during that whole process, which was very good. But of course now the situation is better, when we know who’s voice we are writing the songs for.

I’m sure it’s not easy to find a replacement when you play something so particular like your music. How was the searching? Where did you find Nils Molin?

Olof: It’s was especially hard for this band, since it wasn’t only focus on finding a great singer, but also a voice that could fit Elize’s. Henrik found Nils, he suggested him to the rest of the band. I known Nils also through Dynazty. He is a great artist. We knew he was a fan of Amaranthe since before, which was a plus. We asked if he was interested to fill in for a few shows. He fitted very well into the group, also on a personal level, which is very important, since we are touring actively.

There is a song in Maximalism, your last album, sang only by Elize. There is another songs in which occurs the same? Why there’s no other voices in “Endlessly”?

Olof: We’ve performed songs before with only the clean vocals, such as Burn with me and True. Since we knew already before finishing the album, that Jake wasn’t gonna be a part of the band anymore, it was a natural choice to leave this one up to Elize. Fury, Henrik’s song, includes vocals by Elize only also in the choruses, and that was a conscious decision, based on the same fact. As a band we wanted to create a unit also without knowing who the third vocalist would be. We also knew it was gonna give us the opportunity to make a more diverse live show, which was a change from the past. We might leave more space for Nils on the upcoming album. It’s developing for this band to feel that we don’t put limits on anyone or anything, no matter what happens.
