TEMPLE OF EVIL: Librepensamiento desde Chipre.

A: Hola.

Ap: En realidad no hicimos muchos conciertos.

Ap: Y Downfall of Nur.

The 7th Awakening by Temple of Evil

In English

A: Hello, man. Basically the band was formed in the mid of 2008 by the drummer, Angelwhore, and we had some previous members but for the album we had Nekrocurse, who joined last year. Actually we found the right persons to enjoy the band; people who share the same visions than us. Now we released our debut album, “The 7th Awakening”, and recently we had a gig supporting the band Lucifer’s Child from Greece.

Ap: In general, what is about Cyprus or, let’s call it “the metal scene”, was rising in the past years we see new bands being formed, like an evolution I think, in a “half of society”, let’s call it like that. And for us, as Temple of Evil, we don’t really… I won’t say care, but we don’t take into consideration about what society thinks in general because the society in Cyprus is very religious…

…But you do make a statement just in the choice of the name, for example.

Ap: Yes, I would call that a statement of course. The lyrics represent our thoughts and feelings…

A: Actually the lyrics come from esotheric thoughts, you know. In the personal perspective of each member we are not following any religious dogma or something: we believe in spiritual freedom. The lyrics, actually, talk about a lot of topics… you have to be free and do what you want to do without following the distractions of any organizations, religion could be one, you know…

…So, the lyrics would represent the freedom of the individual…

Ap: Yes, it’s not much of a statement it’s more a representation for our thought and ideas. We expect to do this lyrically and musically, that’s why you see each song with different themes.

A: The lyrics must embrace the music equally, you know, and some lyrics are not talking about something in particular: the listener it’s free to interpretate the various topics as he prefers. We really want to reach the state of mind of each listener, to make him think and focus on the lyrics; open it for him in different dimensions, differents perspectives for the society he lives on, or his inner spirit.

A: It depends. Some people are able to understand this personal art that we are doing, but some other people don’t share the same thoughts and that’s okay. We are not looking for the mass, you know.

But, eventually, this music will get to the mass, so I really don’t know how this music can affect it. For the artist it’s going on a very complicated way…

Well, some people may feel offended by our music or our presentations live but it’s okay; they don’t have to adapt to our ideas or perspectives.

I think that if the band comes up with a strong line to mark what is aesthetic and what is real the people will go to what they think it’s “correct”. I’ve seen people cutting his arms to get a Slayer tattoo on blood which is insane.

A: I believe that our purpose it’s to make people think. We don’t want to convince anyone to do anything; we want people listen to the music and read the lyrics, think more about themselves and take decisions about what they think. Our lyrics are not suicidal or something… it’s more for personal thoughts

Ap: We wouldn’t call it proselitism in any way… we just express our opinions and hopefully some people will understand.

I share that. How a Temple Of Evil live show comes up? Because the album sounds great, but how can you represent that on live?

Ap: Actually we haven’t played many live gigs. A month ago we did a live presentation of the album and we are doing the same cycle next month for a local festival. In our live shows you will get what you expect from the music and the lyrics. It’s an experience… a ritual.

A: It has this ritualistic atmosphere so you can drown in the mist of the…

Ap: Just like the lyrics we want to express in the same way.

A: Youtube lacks of that atmosphere that you are feeling at the live show.

On this way, do you have any particular literary authors that inspire yourselves? Maybe it’s not literature; could be movies or anything in that equation.

Ap: I think that there is too many to mention but for me I like to read a lot of books. But our writes are a representation of our feelings.

A: For me to write any lyrics, or music, I have to isolate myself from anyone, if I can say it, so there is an imaginary experience, something different from my life. For some could be supernatural, but I think you understand… because writing lyrics and trying to convey them to other you have to reach a different state of min. About now my influences or inspirations come from personal experiences, readings… various subjects, let’s say. Each song differs from the rest, but the main idea it’s about the expression of your spiritual freedom and do what you want to do without caring what others say.

I share that. When you write lyrics and open yourself to the world you need to be prepared, so being isolated and in touch with your deepest thoughts is a good formula. But I’m also interested in your sound. How was the recording process? I hear a triggering kick on the drum and a warm drumkit with a warm band.

A: Yes, our recordings are very natural; no copy paste stuff, nothing like that. The trigger is used to put the bass drum on the mix… if it weren’t for that trigger the bass drum would be lost. It’s a 5% of trigger on the bass drum just to be audible and recognisable. The rest is natural recording.

Ap: For the whole process we took about a year: drums, bass guitar, guitars, vocals and we did some final touch at the end.

So no copy paste and a natural sound. You used to record in one or two shots?

A: It depends… it’s very different. For example, I managed to record three songs or four in three and a half hours.

But in the creative moment… do you label yourselves as a band or you just play music?

Ap: If you want to put a label you can call it Black Metal. But for us we just play what we like and feel. That’s why they are different things in our music as a whole to put a label on it.

A: We are not following any particular recipee… all flows naturally

Ap: If it sounds good and we feel good…

A: We are not saying “we are going to do that”; there’s nothing on purpose. Comes naturally from our expressions in art.

Ap: If you put a label… it’s like we said before, it’s about being free.

A: But you can call it Black Metal, you know.

I hate when someone labels a band but is functional to the market and the listener. I really like your music because I see an honest care about it. Also is very creative and it’s something that presents demands.

A: Actually the bands we are listening to are in the same perspective of ours.

Ap: People are trying to put a label on music and not allow themselves to create; they play something similar to something else.

PHOTO

I agree. So, you guys listen to Metal only or something else?

Ap: We all listen to different kinds of music as long as it’s good.

I share that. You listen to any argentinian or latin american music?

Ap: Silvio Rodriguez. I haven’t listen to him for a long time, but I can’t think of anyone else right now.

A: The only argentinian band I know is Hermética.

Ap: Downfall of Nur is amazing. Pretty good.

You said something about Hermética, which name recalls to the hermetism movement, but do you know anytthing about his founder, Ricardo Iorio or the lyrics in Hermética?

A: No, I’m not into Hermética but I know about them. I listened an album of them, about six or seven years ago, I remember “Memoria de Siglos”. But I can’t remember any title because the lyrics are in spanish.

Now you are coming to latin american media and I wonder how the band is approaching to that, because I see a very supportive label. How do you see the future of the band?

Ap: Yes, actually the album was released last week. Right now we are doing live gigs in Cyprus, we are looking into touring in other parts of the world, Europe and other continents as well our plans includes touring…

A: Outside of the border of Cyprus

Ap: And, of course, recording. We are working on new material at the time and I hope we have a new release by the end of next years’ summer.

A: We are planning a vinyl version of the album. I think it will be released during summer… it’s not confirmed yet but hopefully we’ll manage to release it in Greece. Being realistic, we don’t know what the future will bring to us, we are focusing on now, to become better and write more music.
