Los imprescindibles FEAR FACTORY cambiaron de vocalista y, por supuesto, tal hecho despertó polémicas y escepticismo. El elegido fue Milo Silvestro, un joven italiano que quitó cualquier duda con su impresionante talento. De hecho, el grupo se presentó hace muy poco en Argentina y cubrimos ese show, siendo testigos de su capacidad como artista. Nos comunicamos con Silvestro y esto fue lo que sucedió.

¡Hola Milo! Vamos por una pregunta central. No erras ni una nota en vivo y los comentarios en YouTube hablan por sí solos. ¿Crees que le estás dando a FEAR FACTORY una nueva forma que es mejor que antes?

Bueno, ese es el objetivo sin duda, hacer que FF suene tan bien y ajustado como sea posible. Todos trabajamos duro (y seguimos haciéndolo) para conseguir ese objetivo.

Eres multiinstrumentista, productor… Muchas cosas. Y de repente, te conviertes en el cantante de FEAR FACTORY. Por favor, explícanos ese magnífico proceso.

Resumiendo, Dino (Cazares, guitarrista) se puso en contacto conmigo a principios de 2020, durante la pandemia, porque vio un par de versiones de FF que subí a YouTube y quedó bastante impresionado. Me pidió que hiciera más covers enviándome instrumentales, y eso fue más o menos el comienzo de la audición. Pero pude viajar a Los Ángeles a hacer la audición presencial justo en 2021, en el mes de noviembre en cuanto se levantó la prohibición de viajar debido al Covid-19. Pasamos una semana juntos en la sala de ensayo, donde él me pasaba instrumentales de FF al azar, y yo cantaba esas canciones. Le gustó cómo salió, y después de eso, el último gran paso fue iniciar el largo proceso burocrático para conseguirme un visado de trabajo.

Estoy bastante seguro de que, por tu formación, eres bastante técnico. ¿Qué efectos utilizas en las partes limpias? Hay un chorus, pero no logro distinguir todo.

Soy productor/compositor musical e ingeniero de sonido y llevo años trabajando en estudios de grabación. Además, llevo tiempo con electrónica, sintetizadores, cajas de ritmos, samplers y EDM’s, en general, desde mis quince años. Es otro bagaje que tengo y que me dio los conocimientos adecuados para elegir y utilizar todos mis efectos vocales. Con mi otra banda, DEAD CHANNEL, llevo quince años utilizando montones de efectos en mis voces en directo, como KaossPads, Vocoders, pedales, etc. Con FF, utilizo, sobre todo, un pedal de voz TC-Helicon en directo para delays y reverbs y un poco de chorus para las canciones de Demanufacture (1995). También uso un Alesis AirFx, que es un multiefecto en el que usas la mano sobre el sensor para activar y ajustar un efecto, y lo uso sobre todo para filtros HP y flangers.

¿Cuál es tu técnica para pasar de una voz sucia y comprimido a una limpia y suelta? ¿Tienes una rutina mientras estás de gira? Intentar evitar algunos alimentos o bebidas, quizá.

Llevo haciéndolo hace casi veinte años, así que pude trabajar bien mi técnica y aprender a hacerlo de forma saludable. Durante las giras, en primer lugar, evito beber y fumar. Nunca he sido un gran bebedor ni fumador, así que, afortunadamente, no es un gran sacrificio para mí, pero a veces, cuando estoy en Roma con amigos, me gusta beber un buen ron o vino tinto italiano y fumar minicigarros con sabor italiano. Otras cosas que me salvan la vida en las giras son los tés (esos “Throat Coat” que tienen en Estados Unidos son bastante buenos) con miel, un calentamiento adecuado cada vez poco antes de salir al escenario y DESCANSO. El descanso y la salud general del cuerpo son esenciales para la voz; nuestro cuerpo es el principal soporte y proveedor de energía de nuestras cuerdas vocales.

El último concierto de FF en Argentina fue uno de los mejores que he visto Pero hubo algo con el sonido en“Powershifter” -¡qué ironía! -: se cortó la electricidad, pero la banda pudo superar ese problema. ¿Qué pasó allí?

Por alguna razón, el generador no pudo cubrir todos los kW que necesitábamos para el show, así que se apagó. Tuvimos que prescindir de la pared de LED para continuar. Por desgracia, ese recinto tenía muchos problemas.

¿Podemos saber si hay un nuevo disco de FEAR FACTORY en ciernes?

Ahora mismo estoy de vuelta en Roma, pero volveré a Los Ángeles a fines de julio para empezar a escribir y grabar el nuevo disco. Pero no saldrá hasta el año que viene.

Off-topic: como italiano, quizás conozcas a Paolo Villaggio o Ugo Fantozzi. Aunque sea una comedia, es contra lo que lucha el Metal: la alienación de la vida cotidiana. ¿Alguna película de “Fantozzi” que recomiendes?

¡Me encanta Paolo Villaggio y su personaje “Fantozzi”!. Me parece una comedia genial, tan divertida pero inteligente y profunda al mismo tiempo. Captó a la perfección el estereotipo del hombre medio del boom económico de los 70, que trabaja sin descanso en condiciones inhumanas, sometido a todo el mundo, con una vida miserable y sin motivaciones más que trabajar como un esclavo. Por desgracia, eso sigue siendo bastante actual. Me encantan casi todas las películas de Fantozzi, pero las dos primeras, “Il primo tragico Fantozzi” (1975) e “Il secondo tragico Fantozzi” (1976) ocupan un lugar especial en mi corazón. Sin duda, dos obras maestras de la comedia italiana de los años 70.

Hello Milo! Let’s go for a core question. You don’t miss a note. The comments on YouTube speak for themselves. Do you think you give FEAR FACTORY a new shape that is better than before?

Well, that’s the goal for sure, making FF sound as good and tight as possible. We all worked hard (and still do) to achieve that goal.

You are a multi-instrumentalist, producer… Many things. And suddenly, you became the singer of FEAR FACTORY. Please, explain that magnificent process.

Long story short, I was contacted by Dino in early 2020, during the pandemic, because he saw a couple of FF covers I posted on YouTube and was quite impressed. He asked me to do more covers sending me instrumentals, and that was pretty much the beginning of the audition. But I could come to LA to physically audition just on November 2021, as soon as the covid travel ban was lifted. We spent a week together in the rehearsal space, where he would throw random FF instrumentals at me, and I would sing those songs. He liked me, and so after that, the last big step was starting the long bureaucratic process to get me a working visa.

I’m pretty sure that you are a technician guy with your background. What effects do you use in your for the clean parts? There is a chorus, but I didn’t get the whole picture.

I’m a music producer/composer and sound engineer and have been working in the recording studio for years. Also, I’ve been messing with electronics, synths, drum machines, turntables, samplers and EDM in general since I was 15, so that is another background I have that gave me the right knowledge to choose and use all my vocal effects. With my other band Dead Channel I’ve been using tons of effects on my vocals live, such as KaossPads, Vocoders, pedals, etc., for 15 years. With FF, I mostly use a TC-Helicon voice live pedal for delays and reverbs and a little chorus for the Demanufacture songs. I also use an Alesis AirFx, which is a multi-effect where you use your hand over the sensor (on the air) to enable and tweak an effect, and I use it mostly for HP filters and flangers.

What is your technique for going from dirt and compressed to clean and free? I mean, do you have a routine while touring? Try to avoid some foods or drinks, maybe.

I’ve been doing it for almost 20 years now, so I could work properly on my technique and learn how to do it in a healthy way. On tour, first of all, I avoid drinking and smoking. I’ve never been a heavy drinker or smoker, though, so fortunately, that’s not a huge sacrifice for me, but sometimes, while in Rome with friends, I like sipping some fine Rhum or Italian red wine and smoking Italian-flavoured mini-cigars. Other life savers on tour are teas (those “throat coat” they have in the US are pretty good) with honey, proper warm-up every time shortly before walking on stage and REST. Rest and overall body health are essential for your voice; our body is the very main support and energy provider of our vocal cords.

The last show FF gave in Argentina was one of the greatest ones I’ve ever seen. But there was something with the sound of “Powershifter” – how ironic! – the electricity went off, but the band could overcome that issue. What happened there?

For some reason, the generator couldn’t cover all the kilowatts we needed to power the show, so it just went off. We had to do without the LED wall to continue the show. Unfortunately, that venue had a lot of issues.

May we know if you have a new record of FEAR FACTORY in the making?

I’m back in Rome right now, but I’ll be back in LA in late July to start writing and recording the new album. It just won’t come out until somewhere next year.

Off-topic: as an Italian, you might know Paolo Villaggio or Ugo Fantozzi. Even if it is a comedy, it is what Metal stands against: the alienation of daily life. Any Fantozzi movie that you recommend?

I absolutely LOVE Paolo Villaggio and his character “Fantozzi”. I think it’s a genius comedy, so funny but smart and deep at the same time. He flawlessly captured the stereotype of the average man of the 70s economy’s boom, who works relentlessly under inhuman conditions, submits to everyone, with a miserable life and no motivation rather than work like a slave. Unfortunately, that is still pretty actual. I love almost all of Fantozzi’s movies, but the first two, “Il primo tragico Fantozzi” and “Il secondo tragico Fantozzi” hold a special place in my heart. Two masterpieces of the 70s Italian comedy for sure.
