Paul Mazurkiewicz: “Tenemos nuestro propio estilo”.

Cannibal Corpse

1.- Welcome to Rocktambulos, we can’t let pass this opportunity without asking you about your 1996 record “Vile”, quintessential record for the Death movement, and undoubtedly one of the most important Metal records of all time…. What was crossing your mind at that moment and, do you still believe you can deliver such a powerful performance in your current records and concerts?

We were just trying to make the best album possible like we do every time we go to record. Vile of course was a big album for us because we just recently recruited George Fisher into the band. The music also was getting a little more intense in our eyes and we needed the vocals to match that intensity. Looking back it was a big album for us!

2.- Jumping ahead almost 30 years, “A Skeletal Domain” shows a few things, first your loyalty as a band and concept and second, an undoubtedly commitment with the aggressiveness and strength of your sound… some people have said you are a style on your own, how do you feel about that statement and how you avoid to wear down and renew yourself record after record?

I do think we have our own style. When you listen to all of the Cannibal Corpse albums from the first till the last, you can tell it is Cannibal but with different little subtle changes as you go. I think this was just natural progression of the band and that we have maintained our sound since the very beginning.

3.- Metalheads love the original perspective of your transgressive and macabre imagery, generally most of us understood the idea as an artistic way to express anger and being provocative other than violent, but lately your record covers (“Torture”, “A Skeletal Domain”, “Evisceration Plague” for example) seemed to have toned it down a little. Did you feel the “media heat” for such expressions, do you now understand the esthetic of the Death in a different manner or will you keep amazing us in the future with more gore and impact, both in your cover arts and music?

We were just really trying to mix it up. I think “Torture” was a pretty brutal album cover actually and of course “Evisceration Plague” and “A Skeletal Domain” are just a different pieces of artwork but still very horrific in my opinion. When you look at our previous albums the like “The Bleeding” or “Kill” there was no album cover really for those as well. We feel the music should just stand on its own though it is great to have some awesome artwork! We’ve been just mixing it up a bit throughout our career.

4. – Is not your first time touring with a band from another genre. You use to play in multi genre festivals frequently (like the Mayhem Fest or the next Knotfest in Mexico), but what are you expecting from the Testament’s fans, what do you expect from all these old school thrashers who will going to see you in latin america, maybe for the first time?

It will be great for us to be touring with a thrash band that’s a legendary as Testament. I think it’ll be a great mix and we will just be playing in front of a lot of new fans too! it will be an experience we will never forget I’m sure!

5.- We can’t finish without the inevitable question: What can we expect for your upcoming show in Buenos Aires? How many new songs are you planning to play?

Just pure brutality Cannibal Corpse style death metal from us! As for what new songs we are playing you’ll just have to come to the show and find out!!
